Festival Preview XVIII

Here is one of a few larger pieces I've done for this year's festival, 16 x 20 inches. It's an image of another of my favorite spots to paint, El Moro Cove, just south of Crystal Cove.
This one is painted at the foot of a monumental rock wall which is part of the coastal cliff that juts out to the sea ending at Abalone Point.

Festival Preview XVII

Well the big night is almost here. July 5, 2015 the Laguna Art Festival will host it's Artist and VIP Opening Night Party. I've not yet posted all my images, so will continue with that, but for today's post I'll just show a photo of my booth as it waits for the onslaught of art-lovers to crowd through the grounds come 6pm.

I look forward to seeing those of you who can make it for a visit this summer.

Here is another small Laguna Beach scene at Crescent Bay. What a beautiful spot!

Festival Preview XV

I think I've posted all but 2 of the total paintings I did of the Newport Back Bay, so here are the last ones left with that theme.

The first one is a view from almost the end of Back Bay Drive looking back toward the ocean, and the second one is a scene very typical along the same drive of a cyclist one morning.

Festival Preview XIV

Wow, 2 weeks can go by quickly! So, back to the paintings that will be available this summer. Here is a scene I happened upon in O'Neill Park last year that stayed and stayed on my mind, and I knew I had to make a painting of this beautiful moment.

This is a sunset view of Little Corona Beach looking south from the bluff. A beautiful iconic spot for our area here in Orange County.

Here is another morning view in Laguna this time looking south from Fisherman's Cove.
I love the feel of the rocks in shadow while the background is backlit and lost in the morning mist.

Festival Preview XI

Still staying at the Newport Back Bay, here are two pieces about the mood at the beginning and then the end of the day. The light in the morning on these limestone cliffs is amazing, and in the evening I love how the last glow of the sun reflects back from all the windows ringed round the cliffs...a sundown necklace to grace the end of day.

Still at Newport Back Bay, this time my favorite cliff to paint. There are so many angles and moods...I could paint this and nothing else.

Still at the Back Bay for today's post, but farther up on Back Bay Drive for this early morning view of the East Bluffs.

Festival Preview VIII

Returning to the Newport Back Bay again. This is a view that I painted last year, but I liked it so much I wanted to try it again to see if I could emphasize some different aspects of this scene, specifically the foreground. I really like the reflections in the water of the reeds and grasses...it adds to the peaceful feel of the whole scene.

Festival Preview VII

Moving north with this next one. This is a view of the beach in northern California almost to the Oregon Border. The scenery there is as beautiful as it is here, but less developed and with a wilder feel.

Festival Preview VI

Back down to the beach for this one...a foggy morning at the south end of Crystal Cove looking south. Lots of joggers were out this morning when the tide was low enough to even be there. That last big storm, about a year and a half ago, I'm not sure, swept so much of the beach away. It's maybe halfway back to where it was.

ART FESTIVAL PREVIEW V

Switching locations now to one of my favorite places to paint, the Newport Back Bay Estuary. In 8th grade I lived across the street and a block away, west of this beautiful place. Back then, there were no housing developments at the edge of the cliffs, nor on the east side of the bay, which is now home to many beautiful neighborhoods.
Also, at that time, there was no road to skirt the bay, providing beautiful views to visitors as there is now, nor a conservancy dedicated to protecting this wonderful local resource and nature preserve. How lucky we are today, for those foresightful people who knew that this treasure needed protection. Thanks to them this is a refuge not only for wildlife but for anyone wishing for a breath of solitude in the midst of a busy life.

Here is yet another morning view in Laguna Beach. This time it's Fisherman's Cove. The rocks at first light absolutely glow as if they are on fire. It only lasts for a very few minutes, and is so amazing!

Art Festival Preview III

Here is another little piece from Laguna Beach...and another backlit one looking toward Main Beach from below Heisler Park. I love the silhouettes of the cliffs and gazebo against the coastal mountains of Laguna...adding the birds is my fancy.

Art Festival Preview II

I had meant of course to be posting regularly as I kept painting, aiming to reach my goal by mid May. Well I've finally finished the number of paintings I set out for myself and feel more ready to start this up again. We are still behind in photographing, but I hope to take care of that this weekend. I've 3 more paintings properly catalogued though so I'll post those for now.
This first one is a little dawn photo at Shaw's Cove in Laguna Beach looking south.

Art Festival Preview I

I am finally getting around to photographing the paintings I'm doing for the upcoming Laguna Festival of the Arts which will open in July. So here is the first post of what will be probably 15 or 20.
These 2 paintings were done from a very early morning visit I took to Heisler Park a couple of months ago...

Crystal Cove Art Show - "In Bloom"

Here I am back to announce a couple of things. My big news is that I was accepted to exhibit in the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts this year and have been thrown into a fury of painting in order to guarantee I don't run out of work in case I am lucky enough to have good sales. If not, then I'll just have a lot of paintings on hand for which I will have to find wall space. I'll be posting images of the work I'm doing periodically as we get them photographed...

My second announcement is that the gallery I show at at Crystal Cove in Newport Coast is having their first seasonal show of the year, titled "In Bloom". Unfortunately, there isn't much blooming going on quite yet, so I've added floral-ish color where there was none, or else played around with the titles in order to somewhat reflect the theme of the show.

Here they are:
